Automotive professionals looked at the most fuel-efficient car models. Verdict: A well-known vehicle tops the rankings.
For the majority of motorists, fuel consumption is a decisive criterion when choosing a used vehicle. A model that consumes little makes it possible to extend the distances between two fill-ups and to limit expenses in the long term, which explains the growing interest in cars known to be economical.
In this context, automotive specialists have analyzed different models on the second-hand market in order to identify those which offer the best energy efficiency. Their objective was simple: to compare the average consumption of the most common vehicles and determine which one really allows you to drive longer, with less fuel. The study was based on models produced in recent years, well known to the general public and easy to find on the second-hand market.
Among the vehicles studied, several city cars and compacts stand out. Certain diesel versions remain particularly efficient, even if modern gasoline engines also show solid results. Average consumption, expressed in liters per 100 kilometers, remains the key indicator for comparing these cars, since it makes it possible to concretely measure the energy efficiency of a model in daily use. For example, we find in second place in the ranking the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. The model produced between 2014 and 2022 displays a consumption of around 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers in its most efficient version.
Two well-known models share third place in the ranking: the Suzuki Swift produced between 2010 and 2017 and the MINI Hatchback manufactured between 2006 and 2013. These two cars have particularly low consumption, around 4 liters per 100 kilometers. Their size, weight and relatively modest engines largely contribute to this performance. But another model clearly dominates this ranking: the Ford Fiesta. Produced between 2008 and 2017, this car has an average consumption of around 3.7 liters per 100 kilometers.
What’s more, experts specify that it is “pleasant to drive, aesthetically pleasing and practical inside.” Price-wise, it is possible to find 2017 models with around 100,000 kilometers on the clock for around 8,000 euros. In short, a good plan to remember.
