After three hours of deliberation, the Court of Assizes of Parma presided over by Alessandro Conti sentenced Chiara Petrolini, a 22-year-old student from Traversetolo, to 24 years and four months in first instance, accused of double premeditated murder and concealment of the bodies of her two newborns.
The Prosecutor’s request was 26 years, the 24 and three months are explained by the fact that the Court agreed with the Prosecutor’s reconstruction for the voluntary murder of the second child and the concealment of both bodies while the accusation for the first murder was droppedidiot, it is probable that the intention to kill was not considered proven following the first pregnancy which was hidden from everyone, even from the parents and the boyfriend, who after an initial examination were considered completely unrelated to this very sad affair.
The reasons for the sentence will clarify the reconstruction of a story that questions the depths of the abyss of the human soul, in response to which all the actors in the trial, prosecution, defense and court each requested a psychiatric assessment with different conclusions. The young woman, assessed as capable of understanding and wanting but who was recognized as having significant fragility, has been under house arrest in precautionary custody since the beginning of the case, with the necessary permits to follow the psychiatric path which she had immediately been started by the Court to avoid the risk that what happened could be repeated in the event of subsequent pregnancies.
