Buying your bedding on the internet has become a reflex for many French people. But behind some seemingly very reassuring sites, unpleasant surprises are very common.
For several months, certain online sales sites have been offering mattresses and accessories displayed as “premium”, “technological” or even “high-end”, with positive reviews and big promotions. At first glance, everything seems reassuring: careful design, detailed arguments, fast delivery. However, behind this very professional facade, specialists in the sector warn about products which can hide unpleasant surprises. Their main concern mainly concerns the conformity and real quality of certain mattresses sold at very low prices.
The problem is not just about comfort. According to the Parlons Literie collective, which brings together French manufacturers and distributors, many imported products, mainly from China, sold at low cost display misleading information about their composition, their durability or their origin. Tests carried out by the FCBA Technological Institute on mattresses sold online even show that certain models do not comply with French standards. Professionals also point to “exceptional” promotions displayed all year round, vague guarantees and marketing notices which fuel confusion.
Manufacturers now speak of “fast bedding”, in reference to fast fashion. The principle is similar: massively sell very inexpensive products, renewed quickly, with prices that encourage impulsive purchases. Certain signs allow you to identify these sites. The reductions displayed seem permanent, the prices are sometimes twice those on the market and the information on the origin of the product remains vague. Manufacturers also recommend remaining cautious when faced with mattress comparison sites which provide many purchasing links and very flattering rankings. Some operate with commissions on sales and do not always highlight the most reliable products.
An extremely low price is often the first warning sign. Professionals point out that a two-seater mattress sold for less than 300 euros hardly covers the cost of durable materials, compliant manufacturing and real quality control. The words “French brand”, “designed in France” or “French design” can also be misleading without guaranteeing local manufacturing. Other platforms use technical terms like “latex” or “shape memory” without detailing the materials used.
Before purchasing, it is advisable to check for the presence of a clear label mentioning the country of manufacture, detailed composition and any certifications. Labels like Oeko-Tex, CertiPUR or Belle Literie already make it possible to identify better controlled products. Finally, trying your bedding in store remains the safest way to avoid unpleasant surprises. A mattress often accompanies consumers for almost ten years: behind a fair price there are also standards, more durable materials and real follow-up in the event of a problem.
