This is unprecedented. A Chinese Y-9 spy plane intruded into Japan’s sovereign space on Monday, leading Tokyo to vigorously protest on Tuesday against this “serious violation of sovereignty” and this “threat to national security.” The intrusion, unprecedented for a military aircraft, reportedly lasted two minutes off the Danjo Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture, southwest of the Japanese archipelago.
The plane was “probing Japan’s air defense network, collecting electronic information such as signals and radar coverage from Japan,” said Yee Kuang Heng, a professor of public policy at the University of Tokyo.
