From August 28 to September 7, Venice will be the world capital of cinema. Actors, filmmakers and producers will flock to the Lagoon for the 81e Mostra, one of the most important international events for the seventh art. But the glitter, the flashes and the red carpets barely mask an Italian film industry that is struggling to regain its former glory, despite some good news in recent months.
2023 has given Italian cinema some hope. The box office recorded 495.6 million euros in revenue for a total of 70.6 million admissions, which represents increases of 61.6% and 58.6% respectively compared to 2022. This rebound is notably due to the triumph of a black and white film, “C’è ancora domani” (“There’s still tomorrow”), the biggest success at the Italian box office. Released in the fall, it has garnered more than 5.5 million admissions in Italy, exceeding 27 million euros in revenue just before the holidays. A textbook case in a country where Italian films reaching 1 million admissions are exceptions.
