Here’s what you need to do to ensure your psychological and physical well-being after this milestone.
The sixties often coincide with retirement. Daily life must be reinvented. A period that is not always easy to live through and which is sometimes accompanied by a feeling of uselessness. Some women feel old, convinced that their life is behind them. However, youth is a question of state of mind.
The feeling of being old is intrinsically linked to a representation that one can have of oneself. “By consciously choosing to see the glass as half full rather than half empty, it is possible to decide to stay young.” explains Dr. Pascal Douek, a doctor, micronutritionist and sports doctor. To maintain a positive state of mind, you should remain curious and open, and constantly be interested in new things. It is therefore essential to maintain your relationships with others. Maintain your network of friends, go to exhibitions, go nature bathing… Maintaining a social life as you get older is essential because it allows you to constantly have new life projects and contributes to a positive perception of your body and your image. Also think about meditation: “It has been shown to prevent cognitive decline and thus maintain a positive self-image. Another way to create pleasure, well-being and slow down brain aging: playing a musical instrument”explains Dr Pascal Douek.
Physically, you need to eliminate the aging accelerators that are tobacco and alcohol. They significantly increase cellular aging and physical appearance. “Reducing or even stopping their consumption completely contributes to the feeling of staying young” assures our interlocutor. Food also plays an essential role in feeling good in one’s body and mind. “The Mediterranean diet is considered the healthiest because it is rich in omega 3, contains very few processed foods, little red meat and little refined flour. At the same time, the Mediterranean diet encourages us to give pride of place to superfoods such as broccoli, blueberries, mushrooms, red fruits and even turmeric, the anti-inflammatory spice par excellence.”indicates the longevity specialist. In this sense, this diet helps to take care of one’s microbiota which itself influences the appearance of the skin, excess weight but also the psychological aspect since it has been shown that a poor quality intestinal microbiota could promote depression.
As for the face – the change of which may be more difficult to accept as we age – “Its aging is not only reflected by a reduction in the suppleness and elasticity of the skin or by the presence of superficial alterations of the skin. It is also manifested by a profound loss of fat and muscle volume, responsible for a sagging of the face. Facial gymnastics, also called facial yoga, would prevent this phenomenon” advises the longevity specialist.
Finally, saving the best for last: implementing a daily program of physical activity and combating a sedentary lifestyle is essential to avoid feeling old after 60. “In practice, we avoid endless sitting positions and we walk every day, we climb the stairs, we stretch… and we dance whenever possible because dancing has a positive effect on morale.” insists our specialist. For him, the best way to not feel old is to keep moving and not let yourself go!
