Italy believes it has found a way to stem the rising tide of hostility toward mass tourism. To calm the anger of municipalities complaining about the increasingly exorbitant costs of welcoming foreign visitors, the government is considering extending and significantly increasing the tourist tax.
But while this announcement has pleased the mayors of the cities that are the first to be affected, it has already provoked criticism from the hotel sector. The subject was to be discussed at the first council of ministers of the new school year, this Friday.
