Paying income tax, a moment dreaded by some more than others. While the tax authorities are currently sending out the final paper notices of tax assessment, the French will have further confirmation that they are not equal before taxes. First of all because less than one in two (45%) pay it. Above all, More than three-quarters of income tax revenues are paid by the wealthiest 10% of taxpayers.
But are you among the highest tax payers in your municipality? While it is still too early to know based on the 2023 income tax revenues calculated on income declared in 2024, Capital analyzed last year’s figures – 2022 income declared in 2023 -, put online by the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFIP) at the beginning of the summer.
Nationally, 76% of 2022 income tax revenues were paid by the wealthiest 10% of tax households. But this proportion varies more or less significantly depending on your place of residence. To find out if you are among the households that pay the most income tax in your municipality, type the name of your city in the search bar of the simulator below. A table is displayed and details the total net tax according to your reference tax income bracket.
Let’s take the example of Bordeaux. Taxpayers whose reference taxable income exceeds 100,000 euros paid a total of 346 million euros in 2022 income tax. That is 61% of the total revenue collected in the Gironde capital. This proportion reaches 84% if we include tax households whose reference taxable income is at least 50,001 euros in 2022. In Lille, on the other hand, only 46% of the 2022 income tax revenue is paid by the wealthiest tax households with a reference taxable income above 100,000 euros. This proportion rises to 74% when we add taxpayers whose reference taxable income is at least 50,001 euros.
