At a time when the world’s major upheavals call for looking far ahead, politics is doing the opposite. Threatened by the demagogy of populists, blinded by their fall, fallen into electoralism, the parties are paralyzed by their own interests and incapable of acting for the long term. Politics is “in crisis”. French MPs are giving a sad demonstration of this: no minimal consensus can emerge for Parliament to appoint a Prime Minister and govern France.
Accusing the president of not wanting to let go of the reins or demanding a change in the voting system are evasions. The German “parliamentary” system is also blocked, Chancellor Scholz’s coalition is in ruins and the extreme right is reborn, something that was thought impossible in Hitler’s country.
