The story of highly talented, courageous, free, original women, often unknown to the general public, united by their love for their own territory and for having left a mark on the history of their region and of our country. Born from a production idea by Giovanni Minoli and produced by Gloria Giorgianni for AneleAfter Women of Calabria D is comingwomen from Campaniadocu-series on air first broadcast on Rai Storia from Friday 20 September in prime time, work selected within the POC Program ‘NEW STRATEGIES FOR CINEMA IN CAMPANIA 2’ of the Campania Region and the Film Commission Regione Campania Foundation.
An unedited female narrative in 6 episodes of 50 minutes each to retrace the stories of six women from Campania, courageous, stubborn and enterprising, who have left an important mark on their life and professional path linked to their territory; they will be told by six actresses from Campania in a generational comparison that aims to enhance a heterogeneous and unconventional image of Campania, all female, far from clichés and stereotypes, recovering from the collective memory exemplary stories of modernity.
Antonia Truppo, Maria Pia Calzone, Iaia Forte, Marisa Laurito, Monica Nappo and Rebecca Furfaro are the actress-narrators of these six stories: Concetta Barra (Procida, 1922 – Naples, 1993), singer and actress, Matilde Serao (Patras, 1856 – Naples, 1927), the first Italian woman to found and direct a daily newspaper, Elvira Notari (Salerno, 1875 – Cava de’ Tirreni, 1946), the first Italian film director and one of the first in the history of world cinema, Luciana Viviani (Naples, 1917 – Rome, 2012), Italian partisan and politician, Tina Pica (Naples, 1884 – Naples, 1968), actress and playwright, and Maria Teresa De Filippis (Naples, 1926 – Scanzorosciate, 2016), the first woman to have raced in Formula 1.
«Women of Campania continues the story – that Anele intends to preside over – on the female excellences of the country through a journey through various territories», declares Gloria Giorgianni, creator and producer of the project, «in a broader project that will tell the stories of great women linked to each Italian Region (Women of Veneto and Women of Sardinia are already in development).Women very different from each other, whose stories can be a symbol and inspiration for the new generations: women who fought to improve the conditions of their land, who asserted themselves in environments that were at the time almost entirely male, and who achieved, by emancipating themselves from the dogmas in force, self-determination of their own social position”,

The narrative language, which follows a fictional line carried forward by the leading actress, also makes use of archive footage and interviews with illustrious witnesses from the world of culture, entertainment and sport, including among others: the actor and singer Peppe Barra, the singer-songwriter La Niña, the director Lamberto Lambertini, the journalist and theatre critic Giulio Baffi, the sports journalist Giorgio Terruzzi, the pilot Vicky Piriathe Neapolitan street artist Trisha Palma, the director and singer Margherita Vicario, the film journalist and writer Laura Delli Colli, the actors Cristina Donadio and Patrizio Rispo. And again: the journalist Titta Fiore, the Director of “Il Mattino” Roberto Napoletano, the film historian and professor at the University of Salerno Pasquale Iaccio.
The project also sees important collaborations such as those with Poste Italiane for the episode dedicated to Matilde Serao – who began her career as a telegrapher at the Central Post Office in Naples in 1874 – and with the Cineteca Nazionale – CSC – which has restored and conserves almost all of the films by the director and producer Elvira Notari.
The story is set against the backdrop of the places in Campania where the six protagonists lived, to also convey a journey full of encounters with family members, friends, fellow citizens, who gave their precious contribution to reconstructing their lives, battles, difficulties and successes. Pstarting from Naples, passing through Benevento, from Salerno to Carinola and Ventaroli, up to Procida, the docu-series also represents a physical and symbolic journey into the natural, cultural, urban and historical heritage of the Campania region.
