The cut tops of the boat.
The boat of the city councilor Marco Basile, consultant of Periodici San Paolo, was sunk in the waters of Porto Cesareo, an act that the mayor Silvia Tarantino did not hesitate to define as “a mafia act”. The boat, inherited from his father, a fisherman, was recently refurbished, but was found sunk with cut ropes and a damaged hull, a few meters from the shore. A very serious act of intimidation against those who have been engaged in politics in the name of legality for years
“They knew very well that they were hitting something I care about. It was a memory of my father, a fisherman,” said Basile, expressing deep bitterness for what happened. After a career in large Italian publishing groups, Basile had returned to Porto Cesareo to contribute to the administrative life of the town and defend its territory. The act of vandalism was stigmatized by the mayor, who declared: “Today a municipal councilor with responsibility for, among other things, Fishing and Commerce suffered an act of vandalism similar to the mafia.”
The entire Administration expressed full solidarity with Basile, hoping that those responsible will be identified soon. “Whoever committed it knew very well how to strike,” reiterated the councilor, who in these hours continues to receive attestations of solidarity, underlining the emotional importance of the boat, a symbol of the bond with his father who passed away last year.
Basile, who graduated in Economics in Turin, worked for prestigious Italian publishing groups, such as the San Paolo group, publisher of Famiglia Cristiana, and held positions of responsibility, such as marketing director of Sole 24 Ore. Today he is involved in the political and administrative management of Porto Cesareo, his hometown, trying to bring a modern and international vision to local dynamics.
The Carabinieri are investigating the incident, while the local community expresses affection and sorrow for what happened.
