The participation of the “SuperEroica” group of the Allianz UMANA MENTE Foundation in the 2024 edition of “L’Eroica”, the famous cycling event which every year attracts thousands of enthusiasts to the white roads of Chianti, ended with great success. This year, the group reached a record number of 37 participants, including athletes with intellectual-relational or physical disabilities, athletic trainers, volunteers and medical staff.
From 2022, the “SuperEroica” project allows people with disabilities to live the unique experience of racing on the same roads that have made the history of Italian cycling. This year’s edition, held on 5 and 6 October, offered five routes, from the shortest of 46 km to the longest of 208 km, allowing the project’s athletes to stand out for their commitment, team spirit and passion.
Ten cyclists with intellectual-relational disabilities, two with physical disabilities and 25 other people including trainers, Paralympic athletes, volunteers and staff participated successfully, demonstrating that sport can break down any barrier. The group completed the 46 km route with determination, while a smaller group attempted the 135 km “Medio – Crete Senesi” route, tackling over 2,200 meters of altitude difference.
In addition to sporting participation, the project was enriched with moments of sharing such as the stop at the “Apesosta”, organized by the children with disabilities from the Orto Felice. This social garden, created by the Allianz UMANA MENTE Foundation, brings together young people with disabilities and elderly people in the area, creating a unique experience of work inclusion.
The “SuperEroica” thus continues, for the third consecutive year, to confirm itself as an extraordinary opportunity for social inclusion, demonstrating that sport can truly be a powerful tool for breaking down barriers and building a more equitable and inclusive society.
