This pair of shoes, largely inspired by an iconic model from a major fashion house, will soon no longer be available on the market. Here’s why.
Justice has ruled. After creating a buzz last year by unveiling numerous models of slingbacks that we all wanted to snatch up, the Jonak brand was finally accused of being too inspired by one of the emblematic models of ‘a major French fashion house. We explain everything to you.
Indeed, since the start of 2024, Jonak has captured the attention of the whole world because of its open strap shoes, called “slingbacks”. Inspired by 1950s fashion, these shoes have been loved for decades for their relaxed look and sophisticated finish, ensuring a polished look any time of day. Only problem? Certain colors of their models quickly became best-sellers because of their resemblance to an iconic pair of Chanel shoes.
It was in particular the Dhapou and Dhapop models which attracted the attention of the house on rue Cambon because of their design similar to its famous Slingback. Indeed, both models feature a mix of beige and black colors, buckle-shaped straps around the foot and a square heel. For Chanel, these similarities go beyond simple coincidence. The court considered the issue of unfair competition, including whether Jonak may have profited from Chanel’s fame. And although some differences were notable, particularly in terms of quality, the color of the heel or the shape of the straps, the luxury house ended up winning the case, ordering Jonak to pay it 150,000 euros for the economic damage and 30,000 euros for moral damage. It was also announced that the brand must withdraw its models from sale within one month, under penalty of a fine of 1,000 euros per day of delay.
Considered one of Chanel’s most iconic models, the Slingback bicolore was created in 1957 by Gabrielle Chanel herself. This shoe was designed to combine elegance and comfort and quickly gained popularity among women who made it their office essential. The little extra? Its signature color combination: a soft beige for the foot part and black for the toe, creating a chic contrast giving the illusion of an elongated leg. The design includes a strap at the back which provides better support, hence the name “slingback”. At the time, the designer wanted to offer women an alternative to classic pumps, which were often too rigid, by imagining a shoe that was as practical as it was refined.
For now, copies of the Dhapou and Dhapop shoes are still available on the Jonak website or on Sarenza and La Redoute. For her part, the sublime Slingback original Chanel can be found on their site but also on second-hand platforms specializing in luxury such as Vestiaire Collective and Vintega, in excellent condition.
