Whether it is an Android or iPhone version, an infinite number of models are currently affected by the fact that WhatsApp has stopped working. And yours, or that of your loved ones?
If you’ve had trouble reaching your loved ones via WhatsApp since November 1, we may know the reason. The social network, owned by Meta, has in fact stopped working on certain old smartphone models. To stay up to date and offer new features to its users, the application must adapt to the most recent systems. The latest improvements to date have made it possible to integrate certain options such as voice messages, instant videos and even message editors. Another recent addition: individual conversation locking. You can now protect certain chats with a password or biometric authentication. This feature secures your private exchanges and responds to the growing demand from users for more confidentiality. Finally, WhatsApp introduced broadcast channels sharing messages on a large scale without revealing subscribers’ numbers. Ideal for brands and content creators.
However, all these changes come at a price: the application’s compatibility with older phones. On November 1, 2024, WhatsApp ended support for certain Android and iOS models. This means that if your device is running an operating system version that is too old, you may no longer be able to access the application. Why this measure? This strategy allows us to focus on systems capable of supporting the latest security features and protocols, guaranteeing optimal service.
Each phone model has a specific operating system listed such as “Android 5.0” for Android phones or, for example, “iOS 15” for iPhones. You will find this information in the settings of your mobile. These operating systems can be upgraded to the next version through updates, regularly recommended by your smartphone. So, if you’re on Android, check that your phone is running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or newer. If your smartphone is running Android 4.4 (KitKat) or earlier, it’s time to consider an update or a new device. For iPhone users, only iOS 12 or later versions are still compatible. Devices running iOS 11 or older can no longer access WhatsApp.
If your phone is affected, you may receive an error message stating that you cannot use the application. In this case, check your device settings to find out its operating system version. An update is often possible, but for some older models, purchasing a new device is the only solution.
