Each room does not require the same needs. Depending on their characteristics and especially the activity carried out there, the ideal ambient temperature of each room varies.
Falling asleep in a room that is too hot or too cool can prevent us from falling asleep, make our night restless, put us in a bad mood, or even make us sick (headaches, colds, feeling tired). The temperature of the room is therefore a parameter to take into account if we want to ensure restful sleep. To guarantee thermal comfort, be aware that while falling asleep, the body regulates its temperature and loses between 0.5 and 1°C.
The temperature of the bedroom is therefore crucial for sleeping well and should be within a fairly low range. Beyond that, the conditions are no longer met to provide ideal sleep. In winter, ADEME recommends a temperature of 16°C for restful sleep in an adult’s bedroom. This can rise to a maximum of 18°C. Obviously, it depends on each person’s habits (pilou-pilou pajamas or rather completely naked, a very warm duvet or rather a light blanket, a night alone or as a couple, a calm sleep or on the contrary very agitated). A room whose temperature is too low, below 16°C, can encourage the appearance of humidity and mold, especially if the room is poorly ventilated. These problems can damage walls, furniture and bedding, while affecting air quality. Conversely, an overheated room dries out the ambient air, which can reduce overall comfort.
To effectively regulate the temperature in your room, a few simple tips can make all the difference. Remember to ventilate the room every day for 10 minutes, even in winter, to renew the air and avoid stagnant humidity. If the air becomes too dry due to heating, a humidifier or simply a bowl of water placed near the radiator can restore a good balance. Finally, choose bedding adapted to the season with sheets and a duvet made from natural materials such as cotton or linen, which promote better thermal regulation.
In summer, it is strongly recommended not to exceed 28°C for quality sleep. For children’s and baby’s rooms, the ideal temperature is between 18 and 20°C, therefore higher than that of adults. In fact, infants take several months to regulate their body temperature on their own.
