Donald Trump has completed his comeback and has been sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. Immediately after the oath on two Bibles held in the hands of his wife Melania, in a speech lasting about 30 minutes Trump promised a new “golden age”, assuring that the “American decline” has come to an end. He also announced the first operational decisions. His priority is the declaration of emergency on the border with Mexico, to stamp out illegal immigration.
The ceremony took place indoors, in the Capitol Rotunda, to escape the cold of Washington. But it cannot be ruled out that it was a precautionary measure for safety reasons. After all, the cold has always characterized the inauguration ceremony of the new president.
The forms were respected. After a meeting at the White House, Joe Biden and Donald Trump rode in the same limousine to the Capitol. The two had not traveled together four years ago, when Trump missed Biden’s swearing-in ceremony. It is traditional for the outgoing president to accompany the president-elect to the United States Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony and this was the case in January 2017 when Barack Obama passed the deliveries to Trump for his first term.
The guests gradually took their seats in the Capitol Rotunda. It was impressive to see entrepreneurs like Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Sundar Pichai (Google), Elon Musk (X, Tesla, Space X), Mark Zuckerberg (Meta) and Bernard Arnault (LVHM) side by side. On Capitol Hill there is the largest concentration of billionaires on planet Earth.
The entrance of the former presidents was particularly solemn, accompanied by cheerful fanfares from a military band: Bill and Hillary Clinton, George W. and Laura Bush, Barack Obama (without his wife Michelle). Then came Chief Justice John Roberts. Below is Jill Biden and the former first gentleman, Kamala Harris’ husband. Then Melania Trump, very elegant and wearing a hat, arm in arm with a Marine. Tenor Christopher Macchio sang “Oh, America”. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris entered the Rotunda together. Shortly afterwards it was the turn of Trump’s deputy; JD Vance. Then Donald Trump finally arrived.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, gave the opening prayer of the ceremony, as he did in 2017 during Trump’s first inauguration. Then it was the turn of the Protestant pastor Franklin Graham.
Deputy James David Vance was sworn in first, flanked by his wife Usha and children Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel. One minute after noon, Trump was sworn in. Donald Trump swore on the Bible used by Abraham Lincoln during his swearing-in ceremony in 1861. Trump also used a personal Bible, as he had already done during his inauguration in 2017.
“America’s golden age begins now,” were the first words of the 47th president’s speech. “I will quite simply put America first,” he added. “From this moment on, America’s decline is over,” he promised. “Our sovereignty will be recovered, our security will be restored, the scales of justice will be rebalanced.” , he declared, adding that “the violent and unjust weaponization of the United States Department of Justice will end.” “Our first priority will be to create a proud, prosperous and free nation,” he declared.
Trump promised that America will soon be “bigger, stronger and far more exceptional than ever before” and that he returns to the presidency “confident and optimistic” and that it is “the beginning of an exciting new era of national success.” “Sunlight is pouring across the world, and America has a chance to seize this opportunity like never before,” he added. Trump did not spare a jab at Biden by saying: “Now we have a government that is unable to manage even a simple internal crisis.”
All illegal entries will be “immediately blocked”, he said, adding that the Government will begin the process of repatriating millions of “criminal aliens” back to where they came from. Then he added that today’s executive orders “will designate the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.”
Trump also reiterated the intention to regain control of the Panama Canal. “It is now run by China, we will not let them have it and we will take it back,” he said, lying. The future is ours and our golden age has just begun,” he concluded. Now America and the world await him to be put to the test.
