In this city, the inhabitants will be deprived of sun for 64 days and will not see it again before next year! But why then?
It is a period feared by many that has just started: some places in the globe will be deprived of sun for several weeks! And for good reason, the polar night started. It is a phenomenon that occurs in polar circles when the sun is under the horizon. In this city of a well -known country, the sun will not rise for example for 64 days.
This November 18, 2024, the inhabitants of this city admired their last sunset before … the year 2025! The polar night now settles in this part of the globe until January 22. For the next few weeks, the sun will not go beyond the horizon line and the inhabitants will therefore have to live in relative darkness.
It is the village of Utqiagvik, located in Alaska, the largest state in the United States. This place, the most northern in the country, has also inspired the fictitious city of Ennis in the HBO series True detective And will not see the sun for 64 days in total! The closer to the North Pole, the more this phenomenon lasts a long time. Thus, in Norway, in Cap Nord, the most northern point in the globe, the polar night can last from the end of October to the beginning of February! This is the ideal moment to go hunting at the northern borealis, since they are especially visible when the sky is dark and clear.
But in these places, although the sun does not exceed the horizon for several weeks, a small light persists all the same during the (short) days. We sometimes witness phases of solar twilight, which last a few hours, during which the sky is often tinged with fairly charming pink nuances. If some fear the phenomenon of the polar night, which deprives sunlight, others are delighted to discover the sky to tackle a unique atmosphere for a few weeks. Note that in summer, it is the opposite phenomenon that occurs: the sun never descends below the horizon and does not go to bed for 24 hours.
