As frequent as it is feared, fat stains are among the worst to clean. But that was before knowing this grandmother’s tip that requires a product that we all have at home!
Whether on clothing or household clothes, fat stains often come from projections of oil or butter in cooking, traces of fatty fingers, condiments and sauces rich in fat (such as mayonnaise or vinaigrette) or cosmetic products (oils, creams, makeup). These spots are therefore legion on tablecloths, tea towels and towels, but also on clothes worn during meals or cooking.
To overcome a stain of fat without going through the pressing box, several tips circulate online, like the bicarbonate, again. However, it is not suitable for all textiles, because it all depends on the material of clothing or linen. In order to remove a fatty stain on a shirt, a tablecloth, a cotton towel or tea towel, the French labeling committee for the maintenance of textiles (Cofreet) advises to sprinkle the area with talc or flour, cover it with a paper towel and pass an iron at medium temperature. Then, just rub the stain with a cloth soaked in diluted ammonia (a third of ammonia for two thirds of water), then rinse and wash following the maintenance instructions.
For thick fabric tablecloths, pre-tensioning in hot soapy water can also help eliminate fat residues. But you must always avoid hot water before having degreased the stain, because it could fix it more in the fibers of the fabric. Exit the complicated products: a single drop of it is enough to make a stain of fat disappear and it is the dishwashing liquid. It is a degreasing product by definition which is thus super powerful and overflows with a fatty stain without side effects on the material.
To remove a fatty stain with dishwashing liquid, absorb the excess and apply a small amount. Then rub gently and leave to act for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with hot water, then pass the fabric to the machine if possible. Simple, fast and accessible, the dishwashing liquid proves once again that it is an ally of everyday life. No more reason to panic in front of a fatty stain!
