Japanese researchers have developed a method that would avoid babies to wake up barely placed in their beds.

Sleeping a baby, especially when he is agitated or has colic, often comes from the obstacle course. After having rocked it for a long time in their arms, some parents feel like they have finally succeeded … before a simple noise comes to spoil everything. When they manage to place baby in his bed, they leave the room on the tips of their feet, but this small victory only intervenes after incessant crying who last far too long. By force, fatigue accumulates, the nerves let go, and very quickly, parents have only obsession: finally find a solution to put a sleeping baby more easily. So, is there an infallible method?

Japanese researchers from the Riken Institute conducted an in -depth study on the subject, published in the journal Current Biology On September 13, 2022. For this research, they analyzed the heart rate and the behavior of dozens of infants at bedtime. Each heartbeat has been studied according to the state of the baby: sleeping, awake and calm, or crying. This approach made it possible to observe with great precision their reactions in the different situations. The researchers then tested three techniques frequently used by parents to calm a baby when falling asleep.

As a result, they noticed that walking with a baby for 5 minutes helps calm cry and reduce your heart rate. On the other hand, the simple fact of holding it without moving does not soothe it. In addition, to prevent a baby from wakeing up by posing it, you have to wait about 8 minutes after falling asleep before bedtime. Clearly, the solution they offer in their study is to: carry baby in his arms for 5 minutes, walking and avoiding sudden movements, then sitting and keeping it against you for about 8 minutes before bedtime, to stabilize your sleep.

By applying this method, parents are more likely to put their child to sleep without it waking up as soon as they are in contact with the mattress in your bed. So of course, this does not treat the causes of crying, especially if they are due to a specific need, which can be the case if baby has to be changed for example or if it suffers from colic … but it offers an immediate solution to parents in difficulty, which deserves to be tested.
