It is posthumously that Narko, a Malinois Belgian shepherd, was rewarded by the canine power station during the 5th edition of the hero dog trophies, this April 2 in Paris. Died in 2023 at the age of 15, this dog was trained in Gramat to serve the national gendarmerie thanks to its formidable flair. For almost 11 years, it was alongside the adjutant Philippe Izquierdo that he has evolved, within the Cynophile Investigation Group of Nîmes. His specialty? The search for narcotic products and banknotes.
During a search in the Pyrénées-Orientales, Narko will also discover one of the biggest sums of tickets ever in France in the gendarmerie. “”The money was hidden in many covers: plinths, false ceiling … It was necessary to dismantle plinths to make these sockets. Without the help of Narko, the investigators would have missed out“, Specifies the canine power station in a press release. And it was enough for a single intervention to find this sum, in addition to narcotics and weapons. Thanks to its formidable flair which was also praised by the arrested person, Narko managed to put the” hand “(or rather the paw) on no less than 2,242,000 euros!
A colossal sum, especially since this dog, regretted by all those who rubbed shoulders with it, was one of the first to search for tickets and narcotics on people in motion. When he worked in station halls and crossed a passenger with tickets or narcotics, Narko followed him and then made a passive marking. During the patrols, he was also able to capture an odor several meters and to enter bars by designating the people concerned.
His master Philippe Izquierdo, with whom Narko spent his retirement, admits that his late companion has never really stopped working. “In a walk, it was not uncommon for him to find himself the truffle on the trunk of a scooter, or in the kitchens of a restaurant”, he said. Narko received the hero dog trophy in the “Memory” category. A beautiful tribute for this dog which left a void in the life of its master.
