Some parents do not hesitate to give some coins or tickets as pocket money to their child, to reward them with their daily efforts. But it’s not the best way to do.

When they obtain a good note at school, a favorable school bulletin or a diploma, some parents offer a financial award to their children. This pocket money would then be a small gift to encourage them, encourage them to always do better in life. This allows them at the same time to learn to become financially responsible, in particular by managing their budget. But some daily efforts should not be paid by adults at all, some specialists say and other parents.

Indeed, according to another study conducted by Poll & Poll for Pixpay in 2019, with 500 families, only 29% of French parents believe that you have to give pocket money to children who participate in household chores. According to the child’s psychologist Laurence Peltier, Pixpay advisor, you should not systematically pay a child for the tasks he does at home. “The so -called classic tasks are not monitoring: they participate in the daily functioning of the family, in the responsibility of the child and their learning of social life”, she adds. In addition, parents who pay their child excessively for what they perform in household chores “Can become anxiety -provoking for the adolescent and harm his relationship to community life, because the concept of adaptation to social life is not transmitted”.

Extend the linen, put your bedroom, make your bed, get rid of the table or pass the vacuum cleaner … are all essential tasks on a daily basis which must absolutely be acquired in adulthood without these chores being associated with money. Because if they are not remunerated after doing the dishes for example, they will not really see its interest. “By investing money, we make people understand that household chores can be optional and are not worth it to be done only for a financial gain” explains Kirsty Ketley, a parental consultant, on the Inews site. “And that’s how we end up with a 22 -year -old unable to operate a washing machine,” added the specialist.

So, if you want your child to do the dishes because he is dirty and not because he will win a few euros, the latter advises parents another approach. That of saying: “We all get our hands dirty because we all live here”. According to her, a better way to teach children that they will always have responsibilities, no matter whether or not they are paid.
