COVVID, economic crisis, employment, social networks … Many factors have fueled a new source of anxiety among young people. Explanations.
Adolescents are often bad in their skin, they are looking for each other, do not know which job orient to stress, stress for their exams, some are going through love sorrows … difficult for them to manage all these emotions. At this age, there are many anxieties among young people. And it seems that a whole new phobia appears, from college or high school. In question: the period of the COVVI-19, repeated economic crises, unemployment or inflation … and like many things in life, social networks do nothing. Teens tend to compare their lifestyle to those of stars or influencers who share a more than luxurious daily life. “”Indeed, influencers and social networks tend to exacerbate the place of what is called “ideal of the ego”, this vision of a perfect self (beautiful, rich, intelligent …) that we would like to reach and towards which we compare, without realizing it, its own existence. When the ideal is too present and too inaccessible, adolescents tend to devalue themselves, anx at or depress themselves “confirms Vincent Joly, psychiatrist for children and adolescents.
According to specialists, this new anxiety can cause sleep disorders, headaches, food disorders, loss of self -confidence, and mental exhaustion. Some of these signs can indeed alert parents. But what are young people afraid exactly? We are talking about peniaphobia, the fear of becoming poor, or the anxiety of financial insecurity. And it is not limited to a simple concern: in some, it also generates persistent anxiety, an obsession with work or savings, even a rejection of everything that evokes precariousness. This still not named phenomenon begins to be observed by psychiatrists, teachers and parents, who see emerging a generation haunted by the fear of missing or simply, that of not succeeding in life. This is the reason why young people are particularly concerned.
“This fear is of course not completely unjustified and many adolescents and young adults can be confronted with serious financial difficulties. The drama is that fear does not avoid danger, on the contrary. But it is difficult for these adolescents to step back or to put into perspective in the face of concerns that are often also those of their family or their teachers who are worried about the future of the young generations“Comments our psychologist.
As the exams approaches, adolescents feel more stress, especially if they feel like they are missing their studies or if they do not get their diploma. But when stress takes over, high school students also take the risk of losing their means. Some also have the feeling of never doing enough: they kill each other and put all the odds on their side to succeed in their lives, which can potentially lead them to mental exhaustion.
To overcome this fear, above all, you have to put into perspective. It is not because one misses an examination that one misses our life. And above all, you have to stop comparing yourself to others, especially via social networks. Doing the right choices in life should not be a source of permanent stress.
