Having a fulfilled child is what all parents want. But it’s not that simple! It is still necessary to help him acquire the right attitudes to achieve this. An expert reveals what competence it is essential to have.

All parents want their child to succeed in life, and in every sense of the word. This means having a situation that pleases him and allows him to lead his life as he wishes, but also to be happy and fulfilled, and to know how to face the inevitable difficulties that will present themselves to him. Education can help achieve this, through important skills: regulation of emotions, how to behave with others, etc.

According to the psychologist, professor and American author Angela Duckworth, it would be important to help them acquire something specific which is, according to her, even more important than talent or intelligence. In his book The art of niac – how passion and perseverance forge destiniesAngela Duckworth explains that children who develop this competence are more likely to pursue long -term objectives, to face difficulties and to continue to improve. It is a combination of passion, enthusiasm and perseverance, which she calls “grit” and that could be translated as “niac” in French.

But how do you make your child have the niac? Parents can do several things, and the first is to help him define long -term goals while celebrating small successes. Glad to see that he manages to take steps, he will be more voluntary to continue making efforts in order to achieve his goal, which will teach him persistence. It is also possible to give it a sense of discipline and responsibilities by establishing it a regular routine with tasks that are stimulating (and, of course, adapted to its age). Rehearsal will show him that it is important to motivate yourself and stand for something. Parents must also show an example, because children learn a lot by observing others and imitating them. So if adults show that you have to persevere and sometimes work hard to achieve their goal, they will be their model.

Finally, it is crucial that parents establish a climate of support so that their child develops this “niac”. This means showing that errors are not failures, but opportunities to learn something by teaching them to analyze them and find solutions, which will help him not be discouraged. Parents must also find the right balance so that their offspring is autonomous: being supporting is yes, helping it as soon as it encounters the slightest difficulty is no! It is important that the child learns to find solutions to his problems (always adapting to his age), his parents can therefore guide and encourage him, but not do it in his place.
