Coni’s conclave soon arrived at the white smoke, perhaps earlier than expected: the first to reach the necessary 41 votes was Luciano Buonfiglio, from today new president of the Coni elected with 47 votes against the 34 of Luca Pancalli outgoing president of the Paralympic committee. It is the lesser -known face among the three out of eight candidates really in the running. He is 74 years old, Neapolitan of origin, Lombard of training, scientific maturity, degree in Law, Economic address, Buonfiglio has been here since 2005 at the helm of the Canoe Federation and Kayak, the only federal president in office and therefore the only candidate to express a vote in this election, of the Coni had already been vice -president, from 2013 to 2018, the first term of the Malagò presidency.
Nobody has ever made a secret that Giovanni Malagò, an outgoing president unable to compete, for the AB law that introduced the limit of the third term, to which Malagò tried to resist without success, was the stone conviction of this election, which was interpreted as a “pro”/”against” Malagò.
Buonfiglio was perceived as a dolphin of Malagò, on the other hand Luca Pancalli was warned as supported by the government, but not by the whole government, and the current impression was that it was a more support against Malagò than Pro Pancalli. In any case, zero votes: he had left his supporters freedom, which was equivalent to directing the votes on Buonfiglio, provided, it seems, that there was continuity to the vice presidency and that Mornati remained in his place.
Buonfiglio has a past as an athlete: 36 times in blue with the canoe. He has been several times Italian champion, he participated in five World Cup and in the Montreal 1976 games. After: official at the Cassa di Risparmio of the Lombard provinces, central director of the insurance group Alliance Europe, president of the Technical section Ania and Central Director of Banca Popolare di Bari. Buonfiglio had supported Malagò in the request for extension at least until Milan -Cortina is a candidate only after the extension had been denied. The victory of Buonfiglio is therefore recorded the victory under the Malagò: Coni chose continuity. And he did it not only in this sense: among the candidates there was not a woman and the elected is 74 years old, the average age among the eight in the eight led the 71: it is difficult to deny who tells the sport as a strange world, a little overhang: inhabited by young people by definition, increasingly frequented by girls, but ruled by a punch men older. Also because the rule of the third term applies to the elect, but not for the 50 federal voters presidents, whose spare part is scarce and among whom there are only two women. Between governments and cones, without prejudice to the technical-sporting autonomy of the second, the relationship is always of a tense diplomacy, closely connected to the theme of the cords of the stock exchange, especially since, since 2019, to keep them in the hands of Sport and Health Spa, whose leaders are of government emanation.
