AB: The rarest blood group. The blood group AB+ represents 4% of the world’s population, against 11% for group B, 45% for group O and 40% for group A. Whatever the rhesus, the AB type blood group is the least present on earth. AB+ blood groups are universal receivers. The characteristics of the AB+ blood group are:
► Antigens: Their erythrocytes present the two types of protein A and B. They can therefore only be transfused to AB blood group individuals.
► Rhesus: positive. Only people whose blood group is AB+ can receive, without problem, these red blood cells.
► Antibody: None. Blood groups O- are said universal donors, for those of Group AB+, they are qualified as universal recipients. Any blood group, whatever its rhesus, can be transfused.
