You may increase your electricity bills without knowing it. A repeated gesture in the kitchen, anchored in the habits of many, pushes your fridge to consume much more than necessary. Here’s why and how to remedy it.

Electricity is expensive. And despite the promises of decrease or stability, households remain on the alert. Each kilowatt hour counts. Result: we unplug, we turn off, we program. We are wary of unnecessary watch, we watch the heating, we turn to the LED bulbs. But during this time, in the kitchen, a device turns constantly. The refrigerator.

It is one of the only equipment to operate day and night, without break, 365 days a year. According to ADEME, it alone represents between 10 and 20 % of the electricity consumption of a home. And yet, it only takes a bad habit to weigh down this consumption by 25 %. The problem is that this additional cost is not seen. There is no alarm, no alert on the fridge door, no application that panics. Just a compressor that gets carried away, a temperature climbing inside, and the device that redoubles efforts to find a balance. He then draws from electricity longer, stronger, more often.

According to Salah Sun, responsible for product management at Beko Uk, one of the most present manufacturers on the European market, “Many households do not realize how their refrigerator-freezer has an impact on their energy bill”. However, with a device that consumes between 300 and 800 kWh per year according to its energy class, age, and size, each reduction effort is good to take. The calculation is simple: at the average price of 0.29 euros per kWh, an overconsumption of 25 % amounts to an additional 75 to 200 kWh per year. Between 20 and 60 euros lost, for nothing. And that is without counting the impacts on the lifespan of the aircraft, put to the test. In fact, the error that triggers this overconsumption is not linked to a failure or a technical defect. We are talking about placing hot dishes in the fridge here. In summer, this error becomes frequent. After cooking rice, hard eggs, vegetables or pasta for a salad, many have the reflex to put everything directly in the fridge so that it cools faster.

This action forces the compressor to brutally compensate for this arrival of heat. The aircraft then enters into an adorned. And it’s your bill that takes a hit. So remember to let your food cool before storing them and your wallet will be much better.
