AAH: “Can a donation of money lower my daughter’s allowance?”

A capital reader wants to know if a donation of money to her daughter, beneficiary of the allocation to disabled adults (AAH), risks reducing this allowance.

Alexa, reader of Capital, asks us the following question: “Hello, my daughter touches theAllowance to disabled adults (with a disability rate of 80%). If I donate him -around 31,000 euros -, does that might bring him his AAH? Thank you so much.”

Hello Alexa, and thank you for your question. It allows you to clarify an essential point for families who wish to help a loved one without risking impacting its social aid. Good news: in the majority of cases, a punctual donation of money does not lower AAH.

Donation of money does not count as an income

This allowance is indeed allocated according to several criteria, including the level of resources. For a single person, the ceiling not to be exceeded is for example set at 12,193 euros in annual income. To find out if you are exceeding it, you must refer to your tax notice of year N-2, in the category of categorical net income. For a request made in 2025, it is therefore the income appearing in the 2023 tax notice that will be taken into account.

However, a donation of punctual money – like the family donation of 31,865 euros exempt from taxation – is not considered a taxable income: “The AAH’s resources are only regarded within the meaning of net income and not assets”recalls Mathilde Carrier, investment advisor and heritage in Nîmes. However, a donation does not appear in categorical net income, and is therefore not taken into account for the calculation of the AAH.

The only exception to this rule: if the donation takes the form of a productive income property, for example an apartment rented. “The rents collected by your daughter will be counted as income, and could then reduce or cancel the AAH, depending on the amounts”, underlines the expert. In summary, Alexa, you can donate your daughter a donation of money without fear of lowering her AAH, as long as this donation does not generate regular income.
