At the end of winter, many drivers hit the road without adapting their car to the new season. Certainly, some change their winter tires if they do not have any tires all seasons, others redo the level of cooling liquid or windshield washer. But one detail in particular is often overlooked and can quickly become dangerous, especially if we plan long trips by car, as if to go on vacation. We forget it because it does not make noise, does not flash on the dashboard, and does not seem to be a problem at first glance. And yet it is essential to run safely.
It is in direct contact with the road, collects the cold, the humidity, the nests-of-poule, the sudden braking, and supports without flinching the temperature variations: these are the tires. And more specifically, their general condition and their pressure. However, tires unsuitable for the season heats up too quickly, wear out prematurely, and increase the risks of aquaplaning on the spring wet roads. But that’s not all. Tire pressure should be checked and adjusted regularly. Too low pressure affects vehicle stability on the road, fuel consumption and can cause irregular tires.
According to a study by the Toluna Institute, commissioned by the Bridgestone tire manufacturer in 2022, almost one in five motorists in France does not control its tires before going on vacation. Conversely, against all expectations, they linger on other elements: there are 48 % to check their highlights before a long journey. On the cleanliness side, 60 % take the time to clean their windshields and wash their car. More worrying: 11 % of French people admit to making no checks about the safety of the vehicle before taking the holiday route.
You will therefore have understood, before taking the road, it is imperative to take a moment to check your tires. To find out which pressure is applying, look at the sticker stuck inside the door on the driver’s side, or consult the maintenance guide for your car. And if the trunk is full or if you transport several passengers, the pressure should be adjusted accordingly. This small reflex can make all the difference. And if you have a doubt, do not hesitate to go to your mechanic for a small check before the big start!
