Winter threatens the survival of millions of refugees and displaced people, vulnerable people and families, in many countries around the world. As emerges from the UN refugee agency UNHCR Mid Year Trends report, the number of people in the world fleeing conflict, violence and persecution has exceeded the record figure of 122 million. For many of them, especially for refugees and displaced persons in Lebanon, Syria, Ukraine and Afghanistan, the current one promises to be one of the worst winters ever. Hundreds of thousands of families are unable to protect themselves from the freezing temperatures, they do not have winter clothes and blankets or even sufficient resources to pay the rent and buy food and medicine.
Urgently raising funds to immediately provide life-saving aid to refugees and displaced people is the aim of the UNHCR campaign entitled: “Another winter away from home” and which includes 8 countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Ukraine and Moldova.
«Never like during the winter, for everyone, it is vital to be able to count on the comfort and warmth of your home. Unfortunately, millions of people around the world have lost this certainty due to conflicts and violence and find themselves having to deal, often from day to night, with the trauma of forced flight and consequently with insecurity and frost, with the consequent risks to survival”, he comments Laura Iuccidirector of fundraising for UNHCR Italy. «Unfortunately, in the absence of peaceful solutions, the number of people forced to flee is destined to increase while on the other hand the essential resources for aid are dramatically insufficient. This is why we appeal to everyone’s generosity: even a little help can make a difference in this difficult moment.”
The campaign aims to support the work of UNHCR to provide urgent aid specifically for the winter, such as direct economic assistance, support for home repairs and thermal insulation of emergency accommodation, basic necessities such as blankets and winter clothes, generators and support for the supply of alternative energy, first aid medical kits, food, water.
In addition to various partners, the “Another winter away from home” campaign also counts on the support of some well-known faces from the entertainment industry, including some UNHCR testimonials such as Lino Guanciale, Francesco Pannofino, Elena Sofia Ricci and Filippo Nigro.
