Armenia is fighting for its borders and its democracy. Situated between Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, their voracious and authoritarian regimes could make short work of it. Azerbaijan took back the Nagorno-Karabakh region from Armenia less than a year ago. Without support from outside forces, it was impossible for it to defend it against its neighbor four times its size.
Azerbaijan is also supported by Turkey, Armenia’s sworn enemy since the genocide in 1915. Always denied by Turkey, it is only recognized by about forty countries, including, surprisingly, Russia. Some states do not even recognize Armenia as a country to this day.
Democratic exception
The war in Ukraine having reshuffled the geopolitical cards, Armenia’s relations with the Kremlin have deteriorated. Russia has become exclusive for its spheres of influence. Putin has warned Armenia of the risks it runs if it persists in turning, like Ukraine, towards the West.
Almost an exception, along with Georgia, thousands of kilometers away, Armenian democracy is young and still imperfect. It was installed after the revolution that brought the current Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, to power in 2018. Hopes for the liberalization of political life have, however, been somewhat disappointed.
