After introducing the vote and report by the professors by the students in the current year – an initiative that has opened a debate and had echo in the media – now, in the same school, a new experimental project starts for the next school year: to give a merit note “monthly” to the teachers based on the assessments made by the students.
It is the new initiative of‘Freud Paritarian Superior Institute of Milan, which has 1300 teenagers divided between scientific high school, human sciences, technical/economic/tourist and technical/technological/IT. In particular, from September to May, the class representatives will be able to report the teacher who consider most deserving according to what they decided by their companions.
Among other things, the evaluation is based on various skills of the teacher: ability to encourage interest in the subject, to involve during the lessons, to create a serene and constructive climate within the class, to be available to provide clarifications, to be able to listen and respect students, to show passion and enthusiasm. And again, to structure the lessons satisfactorily, to have adequate recovery strategies for those who do not have good votes, to deepen if requested the topics, to have didactic methods (frontal lesson and group work) that help learning. The punctuality in the return of the tasks and in the communication of the votes, the rigor in the management of the discipline in the class and the result is also important. The school will proceed with the proclamation of the “teacher of the month” and therefore of the “teacher of the year”.
«Our project – he explains Daniele Nappo, Director of the Freud Institute – it was born because we are convinced that it can be a motivation for the teacher who is recognized as good work and wants to improve further. Without neglecting that we think that it can increase trust in the teacher’s skills and encourage their commitment. In a school-work environment, the recognition of merit contributes to creating a culture based on the enhancement of commitment. We obviously thought of making it attribute fairly and transparently, based on clear criteria, to avoid favoritism and guarantee effectiveness ».
