The Families de France association, which has published an investigation into the cost of the start of the school year for more than 40 years for a student entering the sixth grade, estimates that the average basket in 2025 amounts to 211.10 euros, 5.53% less than the previous year. In 2024, the average cost was 223.46 euros or 12.36 euros more. In a more favorable economic context with inflation contained in 2025, the average basket price for a child entering the college in 6th grade returned to 2022 (208.12 euros). For its part, the consumer association Que Choisir, says that the prices of school supplies increased slightly by 2% between July 2024 and July 2025 after an online price statement for 118 items.
Purchases in hypermarket or drive, the two most economical options
According to Familles de France, all spending stations, stationery, non-paper supplies and sports items, have a drop in average prices, observed in almost all distribution circuits. The most economical is to do your school shopping in a hypermarket where the average price of a basket is 192.42 euros or about 8% less than in 2024. In supermarkets, the average cost is 210.53 euros. The average price is the highest in specialized stores with a total of 243.03 euros.
Online, the basket of school supplies from a student who enters the sixth grade is 241.17 euros on average. The most economical option is to make your Drive purchases: the average cost is 160.27 euros. On average, families spend 42.56 euros for stationery, 108.02 euros for non-paper supplies and 60.51 euros for sports items. This last post displays the highest decrease in the average cost: it decreased by 8.59% compared to the previous year.
The Families de France association gives some advice to reduce the bill a few days before the start of the school year. She recalls that it can be interesting to make an inventory of last year supplies before buying. Orient yourself towards reconditioned or second -hand products can also decrease the note.
