It is considered a “little seasonal treasure”.
Have you seen this new fruit in your supermarket, near oranges and bananas? Recently appearing on the shelves of greengrocers and stores, it is still little known to the general public but displays a very interesting nutritional profile and undisputed benefits on immunity and fatigue. It is, most likely, the new winter fruit that you won’t be able to do without.
Recent research from the International Society for Horticultural Science has shown that this fruit is rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which give it its characteristic red color. These anti-inflammatory and anti-stress compounds support immunity and reduce the occurrence and severity of winter illnesses (colds, flu). A single fruit provides up to 200 mg of vitamin C, twice as much as a green kiwi and twice as much as an orange. This largely covers the recommended daily requirements for an adult (around 110 mg per day according to ANSES). Vitamin C is crucial for maintaining vitality, reducing the feeling of fatigue and strengthening the immune system.
Considered a “little seasonal treasure” by greengrocers, this new fruit is the red kiwi. Also called Red, Ruby Red, Kiwi Rossy or Red Passion, it is smaller than other kiwis and has tender green flesh with a red central ring. Its taste is even milder and sweeter than yellow kiwi (Gold) with notes of red fruits or honey. It is a less common variety than the green kiwi (Hayward) or the yellow kiwi (SunGold), its availability is therefore more limited and its price remains quite high (around 1.25 euros per kiwi).
Red kiwi from French production is generally available from the end of October to February. It is preferable to contact short circuits (markets, AMAP, local producers) or to look for it specifically in stores during this short window. The species has existed in China for a long time but in France, its production and large-scale marketing are very recent. The first notable orchard establishments date from 2018-2020.
The majority of consumers accustomed to green and yellow kiwi do not notice red kiwi. Presented as an exotic or premium fruit due to its short season and distinct color, it is too often forgotten in shopping baskets. Now that you know its anti-fatigue potential, you no longer have the excuse to forget it.
