“No, the connected thermostat and programmable will not be mandatory from 2027.” In a message posted on the Bluesky social network, Thursday, December 4, the Minister of the Economy, Roland Lescure, speaks after what he describes as “crys of outrage” from the oppositions. The boss of Bercy says: “The obligation to install a thermostat in existing homes and buildings is being postponed until 2030.”

The same morning, Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, asked the Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, to cancel the decree adopted in 2023, which plans to make it compulsory from January 1, 2027 the installation of a programmable or connected thermostat on heating in private and public buildings.

The “strict transposition of a European directive”, according to Roland Lescure

On X, Marine Le Pen denounced the “huge burden for many owners”ensuring that these mandatory thermostats represented “a purchase cost (…) between 60 and 250 euros and an installation cost between 150 and 300 euros”. “The French, already crushed by energy prices and the uninterrupted rise in taxes, can no longer cope with these normative and ideological madness”added the boss of the RN.

The day before, the former Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, also protested against the measure, justifying the imagination “without limit” of the “bureaucrats”. “There will soon be checks on the thickness of sweaters, a commission responsible for checking the energy efficiency of duvets (…) to reduce our energy bill”he expressed on X.

This is actually the “strict transposition of a European direction”assured Roland Lescure. In order to give “more flexibility for households and professionals to equip themselves”the government will therefore postpone its implementation date to 2030. Prime Minister announced it last November 20, during the congress of mayors, said the Minister of the Economy on Bluesky. The minister’s entourage recalls that the government did not wait for criticism to reject the decree. A consultation on the subject was opened on November 13 until this Thursday.

Roland Lescure insists: the thermostat “serves to better control heating expenses and therefore improve the purchasing power and bill prices of the French”. According to the minister, “help” will be put in place to supervise the installation of a connected and programmable thermostat. Its amount will vary depending on “the cost of the material, the energy supplier’s offer and the number of radiators”.
