What can become 10,000 euros invested in a life insurance during 10 years ? It all depends on the performance obtained over the years. As an illustration, an investment yielding on average 3% per year could reach 13,439 euros at the end of the period. With an average annual yield of 5%capital could rise to 16,289 euroswhile a yield of 7% would potentially bring it to 19,672 euros. These amounts correspond to theoretical simulationsmade without additional payments, excluding fees and excluding taxes.

If a few performance points produce such a difference, it is thanks to the mechanism of compound interest. Each year, the interest generated is added to the capital already invested and in turn produces new interest. The longer the investment period, the more this snowball effect becomes powerful. In practice, however, the performance of life insurance depends above all on the composition of the contract. Euro funds guarantee capital, while unit-linked funds offer higher performance potential, in return for a risk of capital loss.

Costs remain one of the main enemies of performance

Displayed performance is not the only criterion to examine. Payment fees, management fees, arbitration fees or even costs specific to investment vehicles gradually reduce the performance of the contract.

“What will determine a good investment in a life insurance contract are first of all the costs, but also the risk-return couple,” explains Habib ATTIKfounder of ECP.

According to the wealth management advisor, certain fee levels should attract the attention of savers. “Beyond 2% fee on paymentthe contract is already starting to be penalizing. THE management fees should ideally remain below 1% per yearor even around 0.60% for the most competitive contracts. As for the arbitration feesthey should be zero or very limited. » These levels constitute, according to him, good benchmarks for comparing contracts.

The AMF also recommends comparing the fees, the support offered and their suitability with its risk profile.

Contract allocation is just as decisive

The distribution between euro funds and units of account directly influences the performance of the contract. “It is necessary to verify that the contract is not limited to the euro fund and that it offers a sufficiently diversified allocation according to the risk profile of the investor,” underlines the savings expert.

According to him, a 10-year investment horizon generally makes it possible to adopt a more dynamic allocation by integrating more units of account, such as ETFsof the bonds or other investment vehicles, in order to seek better return potential.

Market figures illustrate this difference. According to France Insurersthe average return on euro funds stood at 2.6% in 2025. THE units of accountthey can offer higher performance prospects, but they also expose the saver to a risk of capital loss.

Compound interest multiplies the effect of regular payments

Initial capital is not the only performance lever. Of the scheduled monthly payments make it possible to invest progressively while reinforcing the effect of compound interest.

As an illustration, an initial investment of 10,000 eurossupplemented by 200 euros per month for 10 yearswould reach approximately 35,100 euros with an average annual yield of 5%against 16,289 euros without additional payments.

This simulation illustrates the power of compound interest: earnings remain invested, produce new interest and are reinforced by monthly payments. Investing gradually also helps smooth entry points into the markets.

Yield is ultimately only part of the equation

Looking for the contract with the best performance is not enough. The success of an investment is based on several parameters: controlled level of costsa allocation adapted to the risk profile and one regular investment strategy.

As Habib ATTIK summarizes, “what will determine a good investment in a life insurance contract are firstly the costs, but also the risk-return couple”. Over 10 years, compound interest can transform a few additional points of return into several thousand euros of capital.

Provided you leave your savings invested long enough, limit fees and maintain an allocation consistent with your risk profile, a few additional points of return can translate into several thousand euros of additional capital upon arrival.
