This is an indicator closely scrutinized by households. Due in particular to the war in Ukraine, which began in 2022, energy prices have soared over the past two years. If electricity prices have finally stabilized since Septemberthe French energy budget remains at a particularly high level. According to a survey carried out by the energy efficiency services company Teskial, with Opinion Way, and unveiled this Friday, the average amount of the monthly energy bill for the French rises to 171 euros in 2024. Which corresponds to an annual total of 2,052 euros per year, gas and electricity combined. A figure down very slightly over one year (-21 euros), which can in particular be explained by the price shields put in place by the government in 2023 to limit the increase in French energy bills.
While fuel poverty continues to gain ground in France, the survey, carried out among a sample of more than 2,000 people, also reveals that nearly one in two households declare that they have already been cold in their home in 2023 , despite the heating. An increase of +4 points over one year. The feeling of cold can also be explained by changes in individual behavior since 48% of French people lowered their heating to 19 degrees last year. Probably in response to the government’s request to reduce energy consumption in the energy sobriety plan announced in October 2022.
Energy savings after the work
Another lesson from the study is that the average French budget allocated, excluding aid, to energy renovation work increases slightly compared to 2023, reaching 3,844 euros (an increase of 28 euros on average over one year) this year. Work which has immediate effects for many households since nearly six out of ten French people say they have made savings (59%) after carrying out a renovation, with, for 23% of them, savings greater than 30%. Among the most frequent interventions, we find changing the heating system (28%, +8 points over one year), insulating walls (20%, +7 points) and installing solar panels (14% , +7 points). In addition, 60% of French people (+11 points over one year) are considering new renovation work in the next two years.
