Ines de la Fressange warns on this fashion faux pas which can be “fatal spent 45 years”.
The figure of the Parisian has always inspired and fascinated. For many, she is a muse. With a free spirit, it is known to be both elegant, cultivated and very fashionable. But is it really a reflection of reality … or simply a snapshot?
In the new edition of his book The Parisianpublished in 2019, Inès de la Fressange brings his own vision of this ideal, mixing advice, tips, style secrets and good addresses to get closer. She shares in particular the essentials of a successful wardrobe, how to mix the pieces, and especially how to adopt this particular style, according to her, from the Parisian.
The French model does not stop there. It also gives style lessons to avoid certain fake clothes. Among her advice, she says that “Too much chic can be fatal spent 45 years”. It is not the first to suggest counterbalanced classic pieces with more relaxed elements, for example, a blazer carried with jeans. In a part intended for women over 50, she advises against certain styles such as BCBG shots (“Row of pearls + earrings”), fur, minijpes, micro-shorts or neon colors.
But do these rules still have their place today? Fashion is evolving, just like mentalities. Nowadays, it is no longer so much a question of following diktats as to feel good in what you wear.
If some will prefer a discreet and timeless look, others claim total freedom in their clothing choices. Wearing a faux fur, miniskirt or shorts, whatever their age, can be a way of expressing your personality. Finally, fashion should above all be a playground, a space of expression and pleasure, and never a source of constraints.
