On social networks, blob painting is causing a sensation. This relief painting, where colors transform into 3D drops, fascinates with its hypnotic effect. Want to try? Here’s how to create your own blobs, with or without special hardware.
Blob painting, or blob art, is a fun and hypnotic way of painting: you place drops of color on top of each other until you create a relief canvas. The result? A vibrant 3D effect, full of movement. The artist Mark Hammer made it his trademark, before social networks took hold of it. Today, videos of inflating blobs fascinate as much as they relax. Between art and visual therapy, blob painting could well be the new creative ASMR.
To do blob painting, you will need a canvas, acrylic paint and transparent varnish. The particularity of this painting technique is that the canvas will be placed flat. Here are the main steps to create your own work of art with paint drops:
- Paint the canvas in the color of your choice or leave it white. This will be the basis of your creation.
- Draw a pattern if you want a figurative work. For an abstract painting, you can skip this step.
- Apply the dropsdots or blobs by holding the vertical paint bottle directly on the canvas. You will be sure to start with large drops.
- Leave to dry for 24 hours then apply the second layer with smaller blobs placed on top of the previous ones.
- Let it dry again and start again as many times as necessary to obtain the result you want.
- Let dry one last time and apply a coat of clear varnish.
Where to find a blob paint kit?
To create your blob painting easily, ready-to-use kits are available. They generally consist of bottle paint so as to facilitate the application of the drops directly to the canvas. The Viva Decor brand, for example, offers a wide range of colors, including neon shades. You will find many blob paint kits in craft stores and on the internet. Lidl supermarkets have also added Marabu blob paint kits to their incoming catalog.
