According to the latest data from Oxfam, since 2020 the 5 richest men in the world have more than doubled, in real terms, their fortunes – from 405 to 869 billion dollars – at a rate of 14 million dollars per hour, while the combined wealth of the nearly 5 billion poorest people has shown no glimmer of growth. Meanwhile, in the last twenty years absolute poverty has progressively increased in Italy. In 2023, according to ISTAT estimates, 2 million 237 thousand families for a total of 5 million 752 thousand individuals did not have sufficient monthly resources to purchase a basket of essential goods and services to live in dignified conditions.

«Economic inequalities, the lack of opportunities for young people, poor work, unequal access to care and education, gender inequality characterize our societies and seem invincible monsters»he said Emilia Romano, president of Oxfam Italia. «Among the many who have committed themselves every day against inequalities, we want to reward those who have tried to remove obstacles, invent alternatives, give a voice to the weakest to build a more just world. We do this by remembering one of our great supporters, Alessandra Appiano, who shared with us the battle against the injustice of inequality and poverty. Anyone, with their work and personal, artistic, entrepreneurial, volunteering and anything else can do their part to build a more equal world. And Oxfam wants to increase its impact with this award. It can be done!”.
