Do everything possible to bring Alberto Trentini back home, the Venetian cooperative who has been locked up in prison in Venezuela since last November. This is what the family loudly asks, who on the day of the Ash Wednesday, today 5 March, launched with Alberto’s lawyers and friends The initiative of a relay fasting: thoroughly fasting for 24 hours, until the cooperative is freed. Anyone can join the initiative, filling out a form (bit.ly/digiuno- alberto-trentini) in which the date in which you intend to fast is indicated. “A signal of closeness to his loneliness. An act of solidarity to stay close to him. A small sacrifice to request his liberation”, It reads on the page of the initiative. A symbolic management to keep the attention on the drama of the cooperator engaged in Venezuela with an international NGO, arrested on November 15 (since then he has not had the opportunity to speak with his family members).
The Italian government, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, is making all the possible diplomatic efforts to bring Alberto Trentini home. But the same minister said that the task is not at all simple and the situation is very complex, even if Italy is not renouncing any initiative. The reasons for the arrest are not yet clear. All channels have been activated, but there are currently no steps forward.
Meanwhile, the campaign to ask for the liberation of the cooperator also continues with The “Alberto Wall of Hope” initiative (Wall of hope of Alberto), launched on the site Miro.com: more than 300 people took a selfie with a sheet in hand depicting the image of Trentini and the word “Alberto Trentini Libero”. The petition on the site is also underway Change.org.
Trentini had arrived in Venezuela in October 2024 to work with the international Humanity & inclusion NGO. Graduated in modern and contemporary history at the Ca ‘Foscari University of Venice, the cooperative originally from the Lido of Venice has a long experience in the humanitarian field and has operated with different NGOs. Like the Danish Council for refugees, Solidarités International, Première Urgence Internationale, the Italian Coopi – in numerous countries, from Ethiopia to Nepal, from Greece to Lebanon, from Peru to Bosnia -Herzegovina.
In a note we read that on November 15, while going on a mission from Caracas to Guasdicito, Trentini was stopped at a checkpoint, together with the NGO driver. It seems that a few days after the detention he was transferred to Caracas and to date he is “prisoner” in a detention structure, without having ever formally contested any imputation. No official communication has been issued by the Venezuelan and Italian authorities. As far as we know, nobody managed to see him or talk to him, not even the Italian ambassador.
