Gas prices will increase by almost 12% on July 1. But several means exist to soften the outbreak.

The situation is paradoxical to say the least. Between January and June, suppliers benefited from a drop in gas prices. And yet, the average household bill will indeed increase by 11.7% on July 1, the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) announced on June 10. Even if it remains 3.5% lower than its January level, this new benchmark price, serving as a compass for individuals to compare their contract, will be measured concretely for households. The theoretical annual bill will thus increase from 1,045 to 1,184 euros.
But why such an outbreak? A third of this increase is due to the rise in gas prices in recent weeks. “We hit a low point at the end of February on prices at 25 euros per megawatt hour. The replacement of Russian gas with American gas, which is more expensive, increased this level to 35 euros.points out Nicolas Leclerc, founder of the Omnegy consulting firm.

Above all, more than half of the increase to come on July 1 is explained by the upcoming increase in the tariff for third-party access to distribution networks (ATRD), a contribution paid by households and businesses so that the gas is conveyed to them. It constitutes between 25 and 30% of the individual bill. Announced in February by the CRE, this increase is primarily due to a massive drop in gas consumption in 3 years, of around 20%. However, the 200,000 kilometers that make up the gas network are maintained thanks to a contribution proportional… to customer consumption. So at a fixed cost – that of infrastructure being fixed – the burden is increasingly heavy for businesses and households to bear. What the CRE calls a “scissor effect” tariff.

Put your contract into competition
Far from being inevitable, this new blow to your purchasing power can be countered. In the very short term, simply putting your energy contract out to competition – they can be canceled at any time – allows you to generate savings of up to 10%. “You have to be careful to compare the price all taxes included”warns Sylvain le Falher, founder of the Hello Watt comparator.
According to the energy mediator’s comparator, a family whose home is heated by gas and consumes 14 megawatt hours of gas per year has several suppliers to lower its annual bill by 1,537 euros. Among them: Ohm Energie (1,374 euros), TotalEnergie (1,455 euros), Happ-e (subsidiary of Engie, 1,513 euros) and even EDF (1,518 euros). Rarer, but very profitable, bundled gas purchase offers are also a very powerful lever. Hello Watt has just launched one, allowing subscribing households to benefit from a 15% reduction.

Track your consumption
On a daily basis this time, the tools for monitoring your consumption – the Gazpar meter installed by GRDF or third-party applications such as Lite or Hello Watt – are also a savings lever. Especially since the overwhelming majority of the annual gas bill is concentrated during the four coldest months of the year. This is where tracking can be very helpful. The Ecological Transition Agency (Ademe) states: “Knowing how much energy you consume and when allows you to monitor and better understand how your home works, compare your consumption or identify and control energy waste.” Hello Watt puts the savings at 15%.
Finally, in the longer term, energy renovation work can free you from gas. Insulation alone, at the same heating temperature, helps reduce heat loss by 20 to 25% according to Ademe. The radical solution, however, is for apartments and individual houses to throw their old gas boiler in the trash. Especially since the MaPrimeRénov’ subsidies for heat pumps were boosted in 2024. “This type of investment is very profitable in the long term for individuals”promises Sylvain le Falher.
