The red carpet was rolled out in Berlin on Wednesday. The day after his domestic policy speech at Downing Street, Keir Starmer made one of his first bilateral visits to Germany. The new British Prime Minister announced the upcoming signing of a treaty with Germany on reciprocal access to the two countries’ markets, energy security and the environment, in addition to defense issues.
The leader of the Labour government, in power since last month, will then continue his trip to Paris and will meet Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, after attending the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games, to also discuss Europe and Franco-British ties. Keir Starmer presents this trip as the start of an effort to “reset” the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union, after Brexit.
