“After the age of 35, each hour of lost sleep costs more than before” explains a specialist. The key to keeping skin firm and plump? Your bedtime.

Investing in vitamin C serums, collagen creams and ultra-sophisticated facial massage routines? Very good, but that would not be enough according to this surgeon. Indeed, all this would be of little use if you neglect one essential factor: the time at which you go to bed.

Our skin never really sleeps: while we are immersed in our dreams, it is busy repairing the damage caused by stress, pollution and the sun. This is the famous cell regeneration phase, during which the production of collagen and elastin reaches its peak. But you still have to be in bed at the right time to benefit from it! According to Dr Mehdi Terki, Digestive and Obesity Surgeon aka @mehdi.medecine on Instagram, “After the age of 35, every hour of sleep lost costs more than before because it is during the night that your body does most of the work.” The peak of intense repair is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. since this is where growth hormone is secreted in large quantities. This is when the skin is most receptive to care, and when the repair mechanisms are running at full speed. But be careful: to benefit from this “natural lifting” effect, it is not enough to fall asleep at 1 a.m. You should already be in a deep sleep at that time.

This means that you must give the body time to fall asleep, enter the slow-wave sleep phase, then the regeneration phase. Concretely? So that all this little cellular world works efficiently and your skin remains firm and elastic, the surgeon recommends going to bed before midnight.. Yes, before midnight is the magic timing. After this point, your skin loses part of its repair potential.

Moisturize, massage, protect: it’s good. But for the skin to stay young for longer, you must also honor your nighttime appointment with cellular regeneration. So, the next time you’re hesitating between a latest episode on Netflix and your pillow, remember: the firmness of your skin is at stake before midnight.
