An astronomical amount. In the first half of 2024, fraud on cash transactions (bank cardschecks, transfers, direct debits, etc.) amounts to 584.6 million euros. This colossal sum announced by the Observatory for the Security of Means of Payment (OSMP) on January 21, 2025, is nevertheless down compared to the first half of 2023. As a reminder, the amount of loot obtained illegally by the scammers was then at 590 million euros.
In addition to this 1% decline, another encouraging signal lies in the reduction in the sums collected through manipulation fraud, by which we mean calls from false bank advisors or “mule fraud“. Thus, in the first half of 2024, fraud by manipulation is close to 179 million euros in the first half of 2024i.e. a drop of 2% compared to the first half of 2023 and 9% compared to the second part of 2023. However, be careful, even if the amount reached is less significant than that of last year, the number offraudulent transactions increases by 12%, reaching 3.9 million. Vigilance therefore remains essential.
