Revanchard, this pants knew contempt before knowing the glory two centuries later. Star trend of the season, nothing predestined him to such an ascent. It is today on all stars and in all fashion discussions.
It is the most surprising fashion reversal in history. In his early days, no one thought he would know glory. Mocked by all the men of the 19th century, he became in spite of himself, the star of comic theater. However, it is impossible today not to see it. Flagship piece of this spring-summer, he reigns supreme in the cabinet of fashionistas. Some even think that it will dethrone the skirt during the summer season. It must be said that he is damn more comfortable.
Light and fluid at will, wide and adjusted where he pleases, he frees himself from the skirt defects while combining his qualities. It has a full silhouette, “balloon” at the legs, which ends up tightening on a calf delicately embellished with steering wheel. It is therefore very pleasant to wear in case of hot weather. This pants are none other than the “Bloomer Trousers”, or “Bloomer pants”.
A transparent blow, a blow no, he plays hide and seek with the female body … Surely a vestige of his past as a underwear that we wore under a skirt or a dress. You just have to look at the manufacturing side to realize it. The Bloomer is often adorned with delicate materials, specific to the world of lingerie: lace, silk and all the Toutim. This year, we owe his fashion resurgence at Maison Chloé who, during his spring-summer 2025 parade, wandered it in a romantic and Boho chic version. The ready-to-wear brands such as Free People soon imagine in a more affordable version.
On the story side, it owes its name to Amelia Jenks Bloomer, 19th century feminist activist. The latter then offers the wearing of this “puffy panties” to accompany women in the practice of bicycle and sport, free them from the corseted and oppressive silhouettes of the time and therefore participate in their emancipation. However, this is clearly not unanimous in society. Far from its current success, it is thus mocked on all sides: the press is happy to mock it, laughing women who dare to wear it and campaign to democratize it.
Newspapers like The century (1852) believe that it is “The most absurd idea that could have dawned in a human brain”*; When Constitutional (1851) finds that the ladies that wear it are “Chered in a fairly bizarre way”. But it now belongs to the past: neither fashion pariah, nor fashion faux-pas, Bloomer pants are adopted en masse by fashionistas. Dua Lipa and Carla Ginola have already succumbed to it. Will you be the next to try it?
