Among all the tips for a successful interior decor, the 80/20 rule has a major asset: it also helps keep your hand on its budget. What exactly is it and how to adopt it at home? Here is the essential to use this simple and effective principle in order to create a trendy interior, even with a limited budget.

Do you dream of a trendy interior, but your budget doesn’t always follow? The rule of 80/20, or Pareto lawwill help you prioritize your expenses, but also give you a serious base to imagine a harmonious decor. The good news is that you don’t need to be an ace of mathematics to apply it at home! We tell you how to do it.

What does the 80/20 rule correspond to?

When we talk about the 80/20 rule, this is actually the Pareto law which does not date from today since it was developed by the economist Vilfredo Pareto in 1896. His principle: 80 % of the results come from 20 % of the causes. Does that seem abstract? In everyday life, it is for example 20% of customers who generate 80% of the turnover of a company. It is therefore a small percentage that generates the largest effect. And this principle can apply both to the world of work as well as to the world of decoration and your finances. The secret of a waouh decor? Only 20% of your decorative budget in trendy objects.

For a trendy decoration without breaking the bank, the rule of 80/20 is applied to its budget and spend:

  • 80% for timeless and quality that we will keep for a long time
  • 20% for Decorative accessories following trends of the moment and can be changed easily.

The idea is to offer you a solid decorative base with which compose all year round, regardless of the trends that change, and to transform the atmosphere using less expensive decorative objects.

To control your budget, 80% must be spent in timeless parts. But concretely, what pieces are we talking about? So think of the furniture which will be more difficult to change: Sofa, armchair, coffee table, storage unit… we then opt for contemporary lines quite classic to correspond to all styles and we put on quality materials. On the colors side, we also favor neutral tones Like gray, beige, white or black which will be easier to associate with a multitude of other shades.

Change your interior to the rhythm of seasons and new trends? It is certainly not necessary, but it is sometimes difficult not to crack for this new seasonal print or this color that we see everywhere. With the remaining 20% of your budget, treat yourself and bet on accessories: Cushions, plaids, vases, candles, posters, small dishes … You can do your shopping in decoration brands at low prices, but also turn to the second hand for more responsible consumption. Good deals only need to be unearthed!
