Every year, the Directorate of Evaluation, Foresight and Performance (Depp) reveals the evolution of teachers’ salaries. The last publication, dating from December 2024takes stock of the period 2021-2022. So, how much do teachers earn, on average, in France? In 2022, the average net “salary” of tenured National Education teachers stood at 2,742 euros net per month. It is important to emphasize that in the public service we do not talk about salary but about index processing which is the equivalent of remuneration in the private sector.
Remuneration which, however, covers significant disparities depending on the status, grade and pace of work of teachers. Thus, a full-time teacher received on average 2,811 eurosagainst only 2,039 euros for part-time, or incomplete. Another criterion of differentiation, the missions of teaching (body). For example, associate professors and senior professors (a body specifically linked to preparatory classes for the grandes écoles), are often better paid thanks to advantageous salary scales and more opportunities for overtime. This body gains on average 3,740 euroseither 1.5 times more than school teachers. But be careful, although they are better paid, they only represent a minority.

The effect of inflation: illusionary increases
If teachers’ salaries have increased on average by 3.7% in 2022this progression is not as significant in the face of galloping inflation (5.2%). Result ? This results in a 0.2% drop in average net salary for teachers present in 2021 and 2022 in National Education. In detail, depending on the bodies and individual situations of teachers, there are several disparities: 40% of teachers saw their net salary increasebut almost as much (44%) suffered a reduction in their “salary”. Although the government has taken measures to limit the impact of inflation, such as the thawing of the index point or the revaluation of bonuses (such as the attractiveness bonus), a significant proportion of teachers have seen their fees fall.
There are several reasons for these discrepancies. Individual changes, such as advancement in the ranks, changes in the pace of work (part-time, part-time), or even bonuses and overtime, play a key role. For example, teachers who reduced their working hours between 2021 and 2022 (i.e. 3% of teachers) saw their net salary drop by 8% on average. For the 60% of teachers whose status, grade and pace of work have remained stable over this period, the evolution of net salary remains negative : half of them saw a drop of 1.5% in their annual remuneration. Idem, certain teachers having retired between 2021 and 2022 (who had higher salaries due to their seniority) are replaced by beginning teachers with lower salaries.
