This is a first victory for Gaza opponents in American universities. Columbia, in New York, has decided to let go. She postponed the Friday deadline for pro-Palestinian students to evacuate the campus. There are around 200 of them today demonstrating loudly, in support of the Palestinians in Gaza. But also through more virulent slogans like “Intifada revolution” or “We do not want two States, we want everything”, or “from the river to the sea” (that is to say Palestine from the Jordan to the Mediterranean). Last week, the police made dozens of arrests at the request of university officials to put an end to an occupation accused by several figures of fueling anti-Semitism.
Worried about Jewish students, a rabbi associated with Columbia advised them earlier this week to stay away from New York University because of the risks to their security in the face of extreme anti-Semitism and anarchy… “It is not up to us as Jews to ensure our own safety on campus. No one should have to endure this level of hatred, least of all at school,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Barricades
In recent weeks, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been exported to universities, also a symbol of the divisions in American society. Several campuses have seen tent encampments emerge in recent days in support of the Palestinians, in Atlanta, Austin, Washington and elsewhere. At UCLA University in Los Angeles, more than 200 students set up a mini-village of around thirty tents, barricaded by pallets and signs, reports AFP.
Harvard, the most prestigious and richest American university, has also not escaped the exacerbation of passions surrounding the war in Gaza. It even cost its director, Claudine Gay, her job at the start of the year. It was put on the grill at the end of 2023 by the House of Representatives on the response of universities to anti-Semitism within their establishments. The publication of an open letter signed by pro-Palestinian student organizations on October 7, the day of the attacks perpetrated by Hamas terrorists, provoked indignation and anger among the university’s many donors. The letter stated that it “considers the Israeli regime fully responsible for this entire display of violence.”
