“If I could live another 10 or 15 years without age -related illness, it would be great” shares the doctor.
What if aging in good health did not depend on our genes? This is what Dr. Eric Topol, renowned cardiologist and researcher at the origin of a vast study on “super agers”, supports these people over 80 years old who escape the most common chronic diseases: cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. By analyzing the DNA of 1,400 participants, his team found no miracle of longevity. A surprise that led this doctor to look into another key factor in “aging well”: the way of life.
“If I could live another 10 or 15 years without age -related illness, it would be great. And I really redoubled efforts to achieve it” He shared at Dr. Sanjay Gupta, chief medical correspondent of CNN, in the podcast “Chasing Life”. Dr. Topol, for example, revised its sleep habits: lighter meal and earlier, good hydration, regular sleeping. It also avoids late sport during the day. As he explains, better sleeping helps to age better, protecting memory and heart.
Another very important pillar to age in good health: exercise. Long follower of cardio, Dr. Topol completely revised his routine. He added bodybuilding, balance exercises, resistance bands … and finds that at 71 years old, he is more fit than ever. “If you do nothing, if you are sedentary, start by walking, with a quick step if possible, and gradually increase” he advises. A simple habit, accessible to all and powerful effects on health. And that’s not all. The renowned cardiologist reveals the food he has banned for 40 years, namely … red meat. Instead, he eats fish, legumes and a salad each evening.
It prevents ultra-transformed food as much as possible and has adapted its protein intake to its age, without falling into excess (around 90 grams per day knowing that it weighs 82 kg). It rejects extreme diets and prefers a vegetable, varied and balanced diet. And on food supplements, it is clear: no need to take it when you are in good health, “It is a waste of money, and some of these supplements can have undesirable effects.” In summary, no need to be born with an exceptional genetic heritage to age well. With simple gestures – moving, eating well, sleeping well – you can hope to live for a long time without illness.
