In the heart of Salento, a Melpignanoin the province of Lecce, the memory of Liberation it renews itself and takes an unexpected shape. Not just commemoration, not just civil ceremony: the April Fool’s Day 2026 chooses to become a living, shared experience, capable of speaking to the present. And it does so with a precise perspective: international, choral and profoundly feminine.
In a time marked by conflict and division, the April 25th here it becomes a concrete and shared experience again. Not a distant memory, but a daily practice of freedom and responsibility. Leading this transformation are above all women, custodians of memory and, together, builders of peace. Their voices cross languages, histories and borders, giving substance to a plural story that links the Italian Resistance to the wounds and hopes of the Mediterranean.

A laboratory of the future
The heart of the project is an international artistic residency which, in the days preceding the festival, brings Italian and foreign musicians into dialogue with local middle school students. It is not just a training course, but a true passing of the baton between generations.
The heart of the project, in fact, is a international artistic residency which, in the days preceding the party, will see Italian and foreign musicians working side by side with local middle school students. An intergenerational passing of the baton that will culminate in an unprecedented performance, where the songs of the Italian Resistance will intertwine with narratives of exile, migration and hope coming from every shore of the Mediterranean. It is in this meeting that Liberation ceases to be just a national memory and opens up to a universal dimension: that of the peoples who continue to search for dignity, home, peace.
The program: between community and entertainment
The Liberation Day day retains its most recognizable moments with the institutional celebrations and the traditional social lunch but finds its culmination in the evening show.
“April Party”, created and directed by Antonio Castrignanò and Rocco Nigro, in 2026 it evolves profoundly: from a local event to a multilingual sound mosaic. A musical tale that crosses geographical and cultural borders, keeping the value of freedom at its centre. Alongside the show, a workshop on the songs of the Resistance curated by Giuseppe Spedicato it directly involves the youngest, making them protagonists of a legacy that cannot only be transmitted, but must be lived.
Voices that build bridges
The cast brings together local artists and international guests, creating a bridge between Salento and the world. Among the Italian entries: Angela De Gaetano, Ninfa Giannuzzi, Rachele Andrioli, Cristiana Verardo and Patrizia Laquidara.
Alongside them, voices from other shores of the Mediterranean and beyond: M’Barka Ben Taleb from Tunisia, Maria Momoitia from Cuba, Shahd Awayed from Gaza. A chorality that is not only artistic, but profoundly symbolic: different languages that meet, distant stories that recognize each other, wounds that seek listening.
A resistance that continues
Born in 2023 on the initiative of Municipality of Melpignano, starting from an intuition of Luigi Chiriatti inspired by the work of Rina Durante, April Fools’ Day has grown to become more than just an occasion.
Today it is a community experience that looks to the Mediterranean as a space for meeting, not for separation. A symbolic place where Liberation is celebrated not only as a historical event, but as a daily commitment: welcoming, listening, recognizing others.
Because the Resistance, Melpignano seems to tell us, does not only belong to the past. It lives every time you choose not to give in to indifference. Every time bridges are built instead of walls. Every time memory becomes responsibility. And perhaps this is precisely the most urgent message of April 25th today: freedom cannot be preserved by itself. It must be sung, shared, defended. Together.
